An important question we could not address in this study was what would audience reactions have been to live screenings of smaller productions in smaller venues. Ultimately, we will only if someone tries. So, how about a consortium of smaller venues teaming up to negotiate a distribution deal with the cinemas? If I were in an arts funding agency or research council I would jump on the opportunity to fund a research-led trial which could give such valuable lessons for the arts sector. It’s a far cheaper way of investing in the sector’s capacity to innovate than the traditional approach of funding organisations in silos.
