To my mind it was black rather than bleak, and much wittier than this review suggests. The play is a subtle, layered, intelligent piece of work – something it shares with MacNeil’s novels, in my opinion – and I’m sorry this reviewer misses the nuances of his writing. I agree the play is very intense – that’s what makes it great! Don’t miss.
