I'm just back from a holiday in Berlin where I saw a production of the other Strauss's 'Salome' which was updated to the present, had the 'Dance of the Seven Veils' replaced by a phantasmagoria of shocking/abusrd/political tableaux, and ended with Salome not dead, but off to lead the revolution! What this did was make me realise how much of Strauss's (and Wilde's) original is of dubious content in these very different times. Likewise, Scottish Opera's updated 'Die Fledermaus' of a few years ago, set in a very recognisable glitzy Glasgow, brought home to me the real nastiness of the original, otherwise cloaked by all the overlaid nostalgia of opera cloaks, waltzes, champagne flutes. So, sometimes updating pays off"
