It was my first UBF and it came so highly recommended that I didn't for a moment belive it could live up to the hype. It didn't. It went WAY beyond everything I'd been told to expect. What a weekend! What exquisite use of language (a number of them, in fact). What grace and goodwill. What generosity of spirit. What a body of work. What fun!
Everyone invited to speak gave so much of themselves. Everyone who bought a ticket brought so much of themselves. The little 'extras' made such a difference, too. The Scottish Opera 'Rigoletto' in 20 minutes; the hand-made books exhibition; the really very good Fair Trade coffee outside in the marquee which smelled of fresh grass and home-baking...
...and the craic (unplannable and not to be taken for granted).
Oh, and Mandy modestly omitted to mention her brief readings from her 'four seasons' booklets of 'Wonderings'.
Maryom, you may live 600 miles 'too far south' at the moment, but why not do what I did and move here (from west London)!

I must admit I never realised Ullapool had a book festival. Now I just wish it was at a time of year that I could organise being there ( I live about 600 miles too far south). It sounds fascinating
