‘Deeply depressing’, a ‘gravy train’ – I can’t agree. Sorley’s work reached out to other cultures so I can’t see how he’d be horrified with this celebration of the man and his work. Were it all in Gaelic many folk would have been excluded from taking part. The new books that have come out are in Gaelic with English translations.

C’mon everybody, let’s all fall in love with the English translations! That was the takeaway message from this deeply, deeply depressing conference… the poet would be absolutely horrified.

Many thanks, both Margarets. Filming was taking place throughout the event but I’m not sure if that included the concert. John Purser and Margaret Bennett played some music during their talks which should become available on film at some time through UWSS or SMO. The music would make a great CD – we can but hope.
Yes, Sorley is sorely missed, but we still have his poems and these new books by and about him. I’ll contact the site admin about the tag.

Norrie, what a beautiful review and tribute. It’s almost as though one had been there in person. The only thing that’s missing is the music and the songs. Did anyone record them and will they be available somehow/somewhere?

PS: You may wish to change the tag to read “Sorley” rather than “Sorely”, although I’m sure he’s being sorely missed.
