Fiery Sessions and Mareel@Mareel streaming live online today

29 Jan 2013 in Music, Shetland

Shetland Arts is pleased to announce that Fiery Sessions and Mareel@Mareel will be streamed live online today (29 January) by 60 North TV.

Fiery Sessions, Shetland Arts’ annual Up Helly Aa day traditional music concert, this year starring Vair, Mirka, Freda & Brian, and Kaela Jamieson & Ivor Pottinger, has sold out. However, it will be streamed live online between 2pm and 5pm tomorrow for anyone who hasn’t managed to get a ticket or is unable to attend.

And between 6 and 7pm tomorrow, we’re delighted to announce that Mareel@Mareel, recorded and originally live streamed online on 18 December, will also be streamed online. This concert was very popular and we’ve had a lot of requests to stream it online again, so we’re very happy that, with 60 North TV, we are able to do so.

Mareel@Mareel was a performance of original creative work by Shetland College’s art and music departments, worked together to explore the theme of “mareel” in a number of exciting and innovative ways. The concert featured 10 HNC music students performing a diverse set of original compositions using a range of instruments in different combinations. Electric guitar, fiddle, piano, cello, saxophone, and trumpet all featured, alongside the more experimental sounds of Eamonn Watt’s live synthesiser and Peter Keay on sansula (an unusual type of thumb piano). These pieces were accompanied by video and photo projections of work by 8 third year BA Contemporary Textiles students. Photographs from sketchbooks and abstract compositions were interwoven with images of plankton, underwater photography (courtesy of former diver, Kenny Gifford), and video footage of the students themselves.
