Curious Seed – P U S H

18 Jan 2012 in Dance & Drama

Following the success of Curious Seed’s award-winning production found in 2009, P U S H is the company’s ambitious new dance theatre performance touring across Scotland in February/March 2012. It will involve six performers, a wall, a young girl and an ensemble of extra/ordinary people.

The logic of P U S H is the logic of a dream; full of contradictions and challenges, hopes, fears, needs, desires, and poetry in the mundane. A group of people inhabit this timeless place. Fragments of their ordinary/extraordinary stories unfold and remind us to question what’s important. What pushes you to move, to say something, to push back?

Conceived and directed by Christine DevaneyP U S H highlights her growing trademark of marrying expressive choreography and live music with poetic text and video images.

It also marks the return of her creative partnership with composer and musician, Luke Sutherland (who recently recorded violin parts for Mogwai’s new album). Sutherland and cellist, Robin Mason, have collaborated on the commissioned score which encompasses a pre-recorded sound-scape, live music and voice.

Award-winning designer, Karen Tennent, has created the world of P U S H inspired by the presence of a ‘wall’ – something to P U S H against, to keep us in, support us and allude to something beyond.  Video artist, Jonathan Charles’ projections add a dreamlike quality, bringing the outside world inside, adding textures and a new detailed reality.

Simon Wilkinson’s painterly, dramatic lighting ensures that these ordinary stories are lifted into another realm where the beauty and subtlety of the work is enhanced. P U S H also draws together an extra/ordinary ensemble of local people from each of the areas where the performance is touring.
