PETER URPETH takes a look at the plans for an ambitious new Arts Centre in the Western Isles.
Work on the new Arts Centre in Stornoway will finally get underway in July, and as these drawings from architects Nicoll Russell Studios reveal, the revised design will transform the look of the centre of town.
Director of An Lanntair, Roddy Murray, said: “We are delighted with the design. The architects have produced many acclaimed buildings throughout Scotland, and Stornoway deserves a building of this quality.”
The building will house a highly flexible auditorium that will seat 239 people, but which can be opened out to incorporate the bar area, greatly expanding the range and type of activities than can be accommodated.
In its basic form the auditorium can house theatre, cinema and concert performances along with ceilidhs and more formal performances, and features a fully integrated sound system. The drawings also reveal a light, open-plan gallery space and bar areas.
