ALLAN HUNTER at the Movies

BETWEEN them Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman have earned sixteen nominations and four Oscars. Director Rob Reiner has been responsible for comedy classics like Spinal Tap and When Harry Met Sally.

Any film that brings this trio of talents together has to be something special. Alas, The Bucket List is a sentimental, lightweight affair that coasts along on the charm and charisma of the two stars without challenging them or surprising us.

Nicholson is billionaire businessman Edward Cole. Diagnosed with cancer, he checks into the hospital that he owns. There is a strict policy of two beds per room and no exceptions. That blatant contrivance means that he has to share with mild-mannered mechanic Carter Chambers, played by Freeman.

Carter has also been given around a year to live and the two men bond over suffering and sickness. Edward begins to realise that Carter has a lifetime of regrets and unfulfilled dreams. Edward has the money and Carter has a list of things he would love to do before he kicks the bucket.

Soon, the dynamic duo are skydiving, living the high life in France, visiting the Pyramids, travelling the world and pondering the true meaning of life.

The Bucket List is a little drab and has the kind of artificial international locations that look as if every expense has been spared. The script is obvious and the supposed profundity is debatable, but the outrageous Nicholson is always good value, there are some funny lines along the way and the fine chemistry with Freeman guarantees a pleasant if unmemorable slice of entertainment.
