Nigel Mullan Essay: What Remains
1 Aug 2009 in Highland, Visual Arts & Crafts
NIGEL MULLAN works as a visual artist. Between 1997 and 2007 he helped to set up and run Another Space as well as developing his own practice.
ANOTHER SPACE received funding to show new work in various venues and spaces in the Highlands. Historical and cultural materials were used to mediate artworks for audiences, providing contexts that both welcomed and informed.
In this period he was also involved with the campaign against genetically modified crops and food, adapting the skills of his practice accordingly, and taking a petition to the Scottish Parliament. Since 2007 he has been based in Dundee.
The article published here for Northings gives some reflections on visual arts practice and landscape. The text is accompanied by images and represents a project on the go, the purely visual part being mainly comprised of large-scale digital works for print.
Lawrence and Wishart have published recent articles that Nigel has co-authored with Anthony Jackson in their journal Soundings (The Power In Food, Soundings 34 – Ecowars – 2006 and Vita Nullius, Soundings 37 – Tales Of The City – 2007).
Nigel intends to return and work in the Highlands in the near future.
