Artist’s Talk with Baudouin Mouanda

3 Mar 2011 in Aberdeen City & Shire, Visual Arts & Crafts

Deveron Arts’ artist-in-residence Baudouin Mouanda from the Congo will be giving an Artist Talk about his previous work and his project for Huntly on Tuesday 8 March 2011 at 7.30pm at the Empty Shop, Huntly.

Baudouin Mouanda – Youth Dress Code

Deveron Arts’ current artist-in-residence is a Brazzaville-based Congolese photographer. He poses topical questions about the meaning of and effects of globalisation in communities outside the west. Mouanda’s lens-based work documents a reality where the influence of ‘external’ images of wealth, cutting-edge culture and modern lifestyle create unique subcultures that appear contradictory to their locality and yet are a direct response to the globalising forces that mitigate the desires and aspirations of young people around the world.

In partnership with Gasworks London, Deveron Arts welcomes Baudouin during his residency from February to April 2011. His project is exploring issues of place and identity and their effects on place-bound, unique and authentic youth subculture both in Scotland and the Congo. The residency, divided between London and Huntly, will culminate with a solo exhibition at Gasworks, co-curated and co-produced with Deveron Arts.
