Stellar Quines – Age of Arousal

3 Mar 2011 in Dance & Drama

The hugely successful and critically acclaimed Stellar Quines production Age of Arousal, a co-production with the Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh, will be at the Eden Court, Inverness for two nights on 1 & 2 April 2011.

1885 – a time of great passion, great confusion. Virtue is barely holding down its petticoats. Women are bursting their corsets with unbridled desire.

Determined to make woman rich, ex-militant suffragette Mary Barfoot and her devoted protégé and lover Rhoda enlist female students to master the new invention that will gain them freedom – the typewriter. Three spinster sisters are invited into the school to rescue them from poverty, setting in motion an odyssey of alcoholism, cross dressing and sexual revolution.

Enter Everard Barfoot, Mary’s cousin, an ex-doctor in his 30s about to embark on a life of leisure, and suddenly all the characters in this sexy ensemble piece are erupting with discoveries, contradictions and epiphanies. Genre busting, rule-bending and ambitiously original.

The cast includes Hannah Donaldson (The Cherry Orchard, Baby Baby), Molly Innes (The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Faust Parts One and Two), Clare Lawrence-Moody (The Girls of Slender Means), Jamie Lee (The Girls of Slender Means, Anna Karenina), Alexandra Mathie (The Importance of Being Earnest, Romeo and Juliet, The Unconquered) and Ann Louise Ross (Peer Gynt, Sunshine on Leith as part of the Dundee Rep Ensemble & The Steamie for the Lyceum).

Directed by Muriel Romanes (The Girls of Slender Means, The Unconquered, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie) and written by acclaimed Canadian playwright Linda Griffiths, this production is designed by Janet Bird (The Beauty Queen of Leenane) with lighting by Jeanine Davies (The Snow Queen, The Cherry Orchard) and music by Philip Pinsky (The Importance of Being Earnest, Romeo and Juliet).
