Scottish Companies Combine To Take Pullman From Page To Stage

20 Apr 2011 in Dance & Drama, Music

Clockwork, award-winning author Philip Pullman’s darkly fascinating tale about man, machine and morality, leaps off the page this spring in a brand-new co-production by Visible Fictions and Scottish Opera.

This first-time collaboration between the two companies marries the best elements of live performance and marks the commitment of both companies to accessible, family friendly musical theatre of the highest standard.

The captivating tale is adapted from Pullman’s popular novella by director Douglas Irvine into a modern day singspiel – a form of opera, with its roots in 18th century Germany, combining songs with spoken dialogue and elements of magic and fantasy.

Clockwork also features original composition by David Trouton, a set designed by Kenny Miller, five performers and an otherworldly mix of projection, puppetry and live music.

The tale begins with the storyteller Fritz, enchanting his audience with a wildly imaginative world of kings, queens and mysterious clockwork machines. The more the tale unravels, the more it comes to life – and past merges into present, life merges with machine and fiction becomes real.

With its universal themes of love, hope and humanity, Clockwork promises to be as intriguing for adults as it is for children.

Clockwork opens at The Tron Theatre on Wednesday 13 April before touring to 15 venues throughout Scotland.

For ages 8 +
