Janis Ian at Strathpeffer Pavilion
17 May 2011 in Highland, Music
Iconic Grammy award-winning American singer, songwriter, musician and author Janis Ian is to play a solo acoustic gig at Strathpeffer Pavilion on 28 October 2011, at the start of an eagerly-awaited UK tour.
“At Seventeen,” she learned the truth — that a beautifully emotive voice singing matter-of-factly about the pain of growing up and, hopefully, self-acceptance, can make a classic. And decades after her provocative Society’s Child album brought Janis Ian into our musical and social consciousness in 1967, the singer/songwriter is still writing clever, thought-provoking music, like 2006’s Folk Is the New Black (sample lyrics from the title track: “Folk, it’s the new black/It’s cheaper than crack/and you don’t have to cook”).
Her songs have been covered by a list of eminent artists, including Joan Baez, Shirley Bassey, Roberta Flack, Nina Simone and Dusty Springfield. In 2008, Ian released her autobiography and a special-edition “best of” CD to go with it.
From the earliest days of her career Ian has been a voice for tolerance and personal dignity. She continues to use her artistry to further the cause of social justice.
