Exhibition by one of Scotland’s most innovative artists opens at the Pier Arts Centre

15 Jun 2011 in Orkney, Visual Arts & Crafts

This summer the Pier Arts Centre is staging an exhibition of new work by one of the foremost artists working in Scotland today. JIM LAMBIE BEACH BOY opens on Saturday 18 June 2011 and includes a large new floor installation and a series of sculptural works.

The exhibition is supported with funding from the National Lottery through Creative Scotland and is sponsored by Orkney Independent Financial Advisors Ltd.

Best known for his colourful sculptural works, Lambie takes the stuff of modern life, and transforms it into vibrant installations, often using everyday objects such as record decks, clothing and furniture as elements for his sculptural works, adjusting and reassembling them, reinvigorating with pattern, colour and texture to create joyful objects and environments.

Often designing his installations around specific spaces and using existing architecture as inspiration, the exhibition at the Pier Arts Centre will include a floor installation, new “Metal Box” sculptures and “Nervous Track”, a rarely seen film-work.

Born in Glasgow, Lambie studied at Glasgow School of Art and lives and works in the city as an artist, musician and DJ. His vibrant and thrilling works have gained an international reputation in recent years; he represented Scotland at the Venice Biennale in 2003 and was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2005.

To celebrate the exhibition, the Pier Arts Centre has published a limited edition Artist’s Multiple. Signed copies of the colourful print work will be available at the gallery at a special exhibition price. For further information or to order a copy, please contact the Pier Arts Centre on 01856 850209.

Andrew Parkinson, Pier Arts Centre Curator added “We are delighted to have the opportunity to display these new works by Jim Lambie. We have admired his vibrant and colourful installations for many years, and we are sure that the exhibition will delight and surprise our audiences.”

JIM LAMBIE BEACH BOY is presented with the kind cooperation of The Modern Institute/Toby Webster Ltd, Glasgow.

Meanwhile in the gallery, the Pier Arts Centre is showing Orkney in Colour – new work by pioneer photojournalist John Bulmer. The exhibition features 33 photographs taken in Orkney by Bulmer in the 1960s and 1970s and includes images of people, places and buildings throughout the islands.

BEACH BOY will be on display until 13 August and Orkney in Colour will be on show until 9 July 2011. The Pier Arts Centre is open Monday to Saturday 10.30am until 5.00pm and in July and August is also open on Sundays from 12noon until 4.00pm. Admission is free.
