SCO Wind and Brass make Seil Island and Arran debuts
22 Jun 2011 in Argyll & the Islands, Music
The virtuosic Scottish Chamber Orchestra Wind and Brass ensemble brings an uplifting programme of classics by Beethoven, Scheidt, Gounod and Mozart to Seil Island Community Hall in Easdale on Wednesday 6 July and Whiting Bay Hall on Arran on Friday 8 July.
The concerts, which sweeps three centuries of music and gives each instrument an opportunity to shine, includes music from Mozart’s The Magic Flute and a special arrangement of Beethoven’s Symphony No 1. Canzona by the early Baroque composer Samuel Scheidt features two trumpets and two horns. It is followed by Beethoven’s Sextet for clarinets, bassoons and horns, written when the composer was in his 20s.
Charles Gounod’s light-hearted Petite Symphonie pays homage to Mozart’s popular wind serenades, usually written for oboes, clarinets, horns, and bassoons. However, Gounod insisted that the flute should be included in his work and created a beautiful solo for the instrument in the second movement.
SCO flautist Lis Dooner explained, “This wind and brass concert will give listeners the opportunity to enjoy the wide palette of colours available to this dynamic section of the SCO. We will delight with the florid brass writing of the early 17th century, the grandeur of the 18th century of Mozart and Beethoven and the charm and elegance of 19th century France. We will finish with an arrangement of Beethoven’s first symphony…no strings attached, and hope the audience enjoy it as much as we will.”
The Orchestra’s summer touring across the Highlands and Islands is now in its 33rd year, and by dividing into smaller ensembles, allows the Orchestra to bring music to as many communities as possible. This is the Orchestra’s first performance in Seil Island and the first time the SCO Wind and Brass have played on Arran, following the success of two previous performances by SCO Strings.
This concert will also be performed in Crear, near Kilberry in Argyll (Thursday 7 July).
