Pier Arts Centre hosts screenings of The Itch of the Golden Nit

27 Jun 2011 in Film, Orkney

On Friday 8 July 2011 the Pier Arts Centre will be screening the Tate Movie project – The Itch of the Golden Nit – a half-hour film showcasing the artwork of thousands of children, and featuring the voice talent of David Walliams, Miranda Hart, Harry Enfield and Catherine Tate.

The film follows unlikely 11 year old hero Beanie as he battles to save the universe and return the Golden Nit to its rightful place at the heart of the sun.

The Tate Movie Project is the first of its kind – an animated film made by and for children.

Over the last year Tate, CBBC and Aardman Animations have been collaborating on this uniquely ambitious project, calling out for children across the UK to get drawing and thinking of fantastic ideas for the film. Kids were invited to take part by attending animation workshops in a nationwide roadshow, and by submitting their artwork via the Tate Movie Project’s interactive website. Visit www.tatemovie.co.uk to find out more.

Last October over 100 children from Evie, Firth, Orphir, Burray, St Margaret’s Hope and Stromness Primaries all took part in animation workshops held at the Pier Arts Centre when the roadshow visited Orkney, one of only two gallery venues in Scotland.

The project is part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and has been made possible through £3million of funding from Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to create a cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. BP, as one of the Premier Partners of the Cultural Olympiad, is providing further substantial funding and is helping to evaluate the process to further inform Tate’s future youth projects. As well as broadcast support through CBBC and the entire project being recorded by Blue Peter, BBC Learning has produced fun, accessible resources for kids and teachers alike.

There will be 3 screenings at the gallery on Friday 8 July at 2.00pm, 4.00pm and 6.00pm. Admission is free, but booking is essential. Contact the gallery on 01856 850209 to reserve a seat.
