Ann Henderson – A Retrospective at Caithness Horizons
5 Aug 2011 in Highland, Visual Arts & Crafts
Ann Henderson – A Retrospective exhibition continues at Caithness Horizons Gallery. People travelled to Thurso from various parts of the country to see this exhibition showing 27 sculptures made from a variety of materials, bronze, concrete and fibreglass by this well respected pioneer of the arts who is often overlooked.
Ann Henderson was born into a farming family in 1921 in Ormlie, just outside Thurso. She attended the School of Sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art where she was the only woman to graduate from her course in 1945. Her career took her to Paris on a travel scholarship before eventually becoming senior lecturer at the School of Sculpture in Edinburgh. She became known throughout her career for her experimental techniques and for being amongst the first in Scotland to use materials such as polyester resins and fibreglass in her work.
A regular exhibitor in the Society of Scottish Artists, the Royal Scottish Academy and also the Royal Academy in London, Ann divided her time between Edinburgh and her croft at Balinoe near Culrain. A large studio was built on the croft for Ann’s retirement; however her enjoyment of this was brief as Ann became ill and sadly died on 13th March 1976. This exhibition provides a fantastic and rare opportunity to view a collection of work by this inspirational artist in the town where she was born.
Two of Ann Henderson’s sculptures have kindly been donated to the collection of Caithness Horizons by Lorna Robertson, a close friend and business partner of Ann’s and Wilma and Jim Wilson, Ann’s sister and brother-in-law.
The exhibition runs until 4th September 2011, Caithness Horizons Gallery.
