The Puppet Show where anything can happen – songs, shortbread and murder!
8 Aug 2011 in Highland
For years children have been delighted with the likes of Punch and Judy, Lambchop, Sooty and even the muppet monsters. Recently adults have started to come round to the idea of puppetry with many comedians using them in stand up and films such as ‘Team America’. This Saturday (13 August) audiences will see a puppet show with a difference as the Play Pieces season of contemporary lunchtime theatre continues at the Ironworks in Inverness.
Travellers’ Follies tells the tale of the diva Ms Bigsby and L’Avante the magician meeting in a Highland Hotel, where they are to entertain the guests. There, they encounter a cheeky young porter. The three large animated characters have a history that unravels into a comedy murder mystery-style thriller. But these puppets aren’t your usually characters. They are confident, bold and hardly need anyone to pull their strings.
When Lorraine Bigsby left Luton, aged sweet sixteen, she headed for the bright lights of Weston-Super-Mare. Her success as a beauty queen caught the attention of ‘Deadly Dennis’ who needed a stage assistant. ‘It was the best and worst time of my life’ says Ms Bigsby as she checks her beehive hairstyle. ’Dangerous liaisons darling… stay away from them!’ Joining Ms Bigsby is Pablo L’Avante, billed as the greatest magician in the world, L’Avante is not keen to divulge his past. ‘We don’t go there’ he says with a charming, mesmerising stare. It is rumoured that L’Avante has an eye for the ladies. ‘But of course!’ he says ‘that is why I am excited to be in Inverness on Saturday’.
Zenwing Puppets is the company bringing these puppets to life and with these two great entertainers, suitcases full of Highland scenery and shortbread, the audience are in for a real treat! The ticket price includes lunch of award-winning pies by MacDougall & Hastie. Take a Play Pieces ticket in to claim 10% discount in their shop in the Victorian Market.
