Science Festival event at Gable End Theatre

On Saturday, 3 September 2011, the Gable End Theatre in Orkney has a bumper triple bill of speakers to bring the 2011 Orkney International Science Festival to Hoy and Walls.

KEN MACLEOD, science fiction writer, originally from Stornaway and the speaker for this year’s Grimond Lecture, talks on intuitive futures for islands on the edge and opportunities and perils in a changing world.

DR JOHN F. BROWN, geologist from Stromness, describes the fascinating geology of Hoy and Walls and how to read our rocks through the eras of ancient seas, volcanoes and scraping ice.

ALISON McLURE, secretary to the Institute of Physics in Scotland, gives an illustrated talk on her scientific expeditions to Svalbard, Norway’s Arctic islands in the far north, with images of stunning landscapes, glaciers, fjords, reindeer and seabirds.

Preceded by a free finger buffet of Orkney produce, including Kirkwall Bay salmon, Hoy char, sweet cured herring among other bakes and goodies.
Start time is  Buffet reception at 7 FOR 8 p.m.

Entrance for all three talks: £4, £2 concessions; school-age children free.
