A western themed music and film night is soon to hit Orkney courtesy of the recently formed Orkney Moving Image Society. The night will comprise of a multi-award winning documentary supported by home grown musical talent.

‘Roll Out, Cowboy’ has screened to great acclaim all over the USA, winning awards in Atlanta, Seattle and Arizona, and is now on its Scottish tour. The grand finale will see this gem of a film supported by Orkney’s resident wranglers, Duncan McLean and the Driftwood Cowboys.

‘Roll Out, Cowboy’s’ Chris ‘Sandman’ Sand is the face of the dying American West. Except for one thing: he raps. The Rappin’ Cowboy grew up rhyming to the pulse of irrigation pumps. The result – a Woody Guthrie protégé who looks like a cowboy but writes songs like LL Cool J.

‘Roll Out, Cowboy’ follows Sandman as he travels the open road from North Dakota to Washington and back again, experiencing the highs and lows of touring as a modern day travelling troubadour. This is not the romanticized, Roy Rogers version of the American frontier. This is Sandman, the cowboy who raps.

In attendance will be director Elizabeth Lawrence, all the way from Los Angeles, to introduce and give insight to the making of the film.

Last seen supporting the Saw Doctors during Tall Ships weekend, Duncan McLean and the Driftwood Cowboys are a new combo made up of veteran local musicians. Their songs too blend the old and new, with tales of highland heartache and island insanity set to classic country picking: neo-traditional cow-folk, you might say.

To complete the night there be a special preview trailer of Matt Hulse’s much anticipated ‘Dummy Jim’.

The event will run for two nights, in Stromness and St Margaret’s Hope: Stetsons and spurs optional (but preferred!).
