Top names from the world of traditional music will gather in Perth Concert Hall on Saturday 24 September for A National Treasure V, the fifth annual concert in celebration of the late Perthshire piper Gordon Duncan.

The annual fundraising event is dedicated to the memory and music of the groundbreaking Pitlochry piper and composer, who died in 2005.  Organised by the Memorial Trust set up in his name by friends and family, the proceeds from the concerts are used to support young Scottish-based traditional musicians to further their talents as performers and writers.

Over the years, the concerts have showcased the skills of many such young musicians, and A National Treasure V is no different, including in its line up reigning BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year, Orcadian fiddler, Kristan Harvey.

BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year 2008 gaelic singer Julie Fowlis makes her National Treasure debut with her full band in tow.  Having spent part of her childhood in Highland Perthshire, she feels a particularly strong connection with the music and short life of Gordon Duncan.

Top Scottish folk group Wolfstone will close the concert in hour of their former bandmate and other treats in store include Perthshire piper and Gordon Duncan protégé Ross Ainslie joining Charlie McKerron, Marc Clement and Tim Edey for a A National Treasure V exclusive.

Brilliant mandolin and guitar duo Wingin’ It comprises Perthshire native Adam Bulley and Chas MacKenzie; their fresh and dynamic contribution to the show will include the premiere of a newly written piece inspired by Gordon Duncan’s life and music.

Pipe Major Gordon Walker, one of the world’s greatest solo pipers performs too and the multi award-winning ScottishPower Pipe Band completes the spectacular line-up.

And, as a past winner of the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards Venue of the Year category, Perth Concert Hall is the perfect place to host what has become a must-see staple on the traditional music calendar.

Commenting on the enduring legacy of Gordon Duncan, kept alive through the National Treasure concerts and the work of the Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust, Trust member Gary West said:

“Gordon was widely regarded as one of the most skilled and innovative traditional performers and composers of modern times. While steeped in the art of traditional highland piping, his approach to his music was always imaginative, fresh and at times radical, to the extent that his influence can be heard within an entire generation of younger musicians across Scotland and well beyond.”
