October Concerts In The Town House

3 Oct 2011 in Highland, Music

Now that the new season of concerts from Inverness Chamber Music is under way, October promises to be a month of variety, with three very different events to cater for all tastes.

Wednesday October 12th sees a welcome fifth visit to the Town House by the popular Carducci String Quartet bringing a programme of quartets by Mozart, Shostakovich and Beethoven.  Based in the UK where they hold residencies at Cardiff University, Trinity College of Music in London and Cork School of Music as well as their own annual festival at Highnam in Gloucestershire, this Anglo-Irish quartet of two married couples has established an enthusiastic international following with over ninety concerts worldwide each year in famous venues such as the Wigmore Hall in London, the Carnegie Hall in New York, Washington Library of Congress and the National Concert Hall in Dublin.

The programme they will be playing features one of the set of six great quartets that Mozart dedicated to Haydn, the first of the Shostakovich quartets to emerge after the repression of Stalin and the best known of Beethoven’s first foray into the world of the string quartet.  This Inverness Chamber Music concert starts at 8.00pm.  Tickets can be purchased in advance from Eden Court Box Office, or at the door on the night from 7.30pm.

At One With Music is happy to present a special Argentine Tango event, a concert and milonga with live-music from The Scottish Tango Ensemble at lunchtime on Friday October 21st. The band was formed in 2009 and is a collaboration of four dynamic musicians based in Edinburgh and Glasgow: Gemma O’Keeffe (violin), Paul Chamberlain (accordion), Tom Berry (double bass) and Invernessian Fiona Macleod (piano). Their programme will include some of Piazzolla’s most famous concert tangos as well as more traditional repertoire from the dance halls of Buenos Aires.

If you are new to Tango, or a visiting tanguero in town, this event is a great opportunity to polish up your dancing shoes and enjoy a special lunchtime spiced up with Scottish talent playing some wonderful music.  Non dancers are also very welcome.  Tickets will go on sale when the doors open at 12.30pm and the fun will start at 1.00pm.

An extra delight to the published series programme for the At One With Music faithful comes on Tuesday October 25th at 1.00pm when the Highland export, cellist Rowena Calvert returns home to play solo works by Bach, Britten, Sollimar and Piatti.  Following studies at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Royal Northern College of Music, Rowena is now based in London where she is much in demand as a freelance cellist as well as being a member of the John Wilson Orchestra and the Cavaleri Quartet, with whom she will be coming to the Town House in January 2013. Tickets will go on sale when the doors open at 12.30pm and Rowena’s recital will start at 1.00pm.

Looking forward, for administrative reasons, the lunchtime concert by The Sutherland Duo, scheduled for Wednesday November 2nd, has had to be postponed to Monday November 7th.
