BBC announces major new documentary project to capture unique snapshot of Britain today

13 Oct 2011 in Film, Highland

In celebration of the forthcoming London Olympics, the BBC is inviting people from all corners of the country to contribute to the definitive self-portrait of Britain today by turning the camera on themselves. The result will create a time capsule of Britain as well as a feature-length documentary to be screened next year on BBC Two.

Britain In A Day – a partnership between Ridley Scott’s Scott Free London, the Production Company behind the acclaimed feature film Life In A Day – and BBC Learning, will provide a unique glimpse of contemporary British life in one day – 12 November 2011.

On that day everyone will have the opportunity to film something that captures the intimacy and singularity of their lives and upload it to a dedicated channel on YouTube.

A dedicated team, coordinated by Rosa Productions, http://www.rosaproductions.co.uk / will run information workshops with people in different communities around the UK. In Scotland the Cromarty based TV Production Company Move on Up are running two workshops, one in Glasgow and one in Inverness. Added to which the BBC have produced a series of “how-to” films and guides aimed at teaching anyone to use phones or cameras to record their day. Much more information will also be on the website http://www.bbc.co.uk/britaininaday  which will be up later this month.

Move on Up will be running an afternoon workshop in Inverness at 1pm on Saturday 22nd October at the Bike Shed in Merkinch. (4 Grant Street, IV3 8BL).

Lindy Cameron said “We don’t want anyone to feel they can’t participate because of lack of skills or confidence, so our job is to support people by running these workshops, or by being on the end of the phone, or by providing email back up or by telling and helping as many folk as we can reach, short of running round the Highlands on the day with a megaphone encouraging people! (It might still happen!) Hopefully each person will in turn then tell their friends and communities because we want to have good representation from all kinds of people from all over Scotland in the finished film. The director is looking for good, honest, bold snatches of real life, or thought, or even just scenics. Not drama. It should be just the rushes i.e.: not edited, as the point is they will select and edit them in London. If you like you can use Gaelic or Scots or Doric or Urdu or whatever language you speak. Plan it well, shoot it as well as you can, and above all make it thoughtful so that you capture the imaginations of the people sifting through hours of material in the cutting rooms in Soho!”

Places on the workshop must be booked ahead as space is limited. They are very much open to everyone and we would especially like to encourage people who perhaps speak Gaelic, or traditional musicians, or crafts people or artists to come along .
