The Making of Longbird – a Retrospective at IMAG

11 Nov 2011 in Highland, Visual Arts & Crafts

The Making of Longbird – a Retrospective,  is an animated film and exhibition by Will Anderson and Tobias Feltus which will be on show at Inverness Museum & Art Gallery from 19th November 2011– 4th February 2012.

The Making of Longbird is apparently a documentary, unveiling archive footage of a Russian animated film from 1911 about a master animator, a work of art and a terrible fire…

Award-winning Highland film-maker Will Anderson takes up the challenge of reclaiming the lost legacy of the Longbird, blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction and making us believe the unbelievable. In his exploration of the character of the captivating Longbird we realise that he is not all he seems. This is a study of a bird but hardly an ornithological one!

This touching, funny film by one of our most promising young animators is the centrepiece of an exhibition which has a supporting programme of film-makers, past and present, from Edinburgh College of Art. The Art Gallery at Inverness Museum becomes a cinema of yesteryear for the purpose with photographs by Tobias Feltus, filmed interviews and other ephemera relating to the film.

The Making of Longbird has just won the Short Grand Prix at the Warsaw International Film Festival 2011, the Golden Dove and Audience Awards at the Leipzig Film Festival and the artist has been nominated for a New Talent Award 2011 by BAFTA in Scotland.
