Inverness Choral sing Handel, Schubert and Mozart

13 Nov 2011 in Highland, Music

Inverness Choral Society returns to Eden Court for its latest concert, on Saturday 19th November at 7-30pm.

On the programme are works by three of music’s greatest and best-loved composers: Handel, Schubert and Mozart.

Handel’s My Song shall be Alway is a first for the choir: it is one of Handel’s “Chandos” Anthems, and this is not only the first time the Choral has sung this work, but the first time it has performed any of these eleven works from the early years of Handel’s residence in London.

Schubert’s Mass in G, his second setting of the words of the Mass, was composed when he was eighteen years old, and it shares the same fresh, melodious quality as his early symphonies, which date from the same period.

Mozart’s Solemn Vespers, K.339 is the work from which the lovely soprano solo Laudate Dominum comes. This work has appeared in the Society’s programmes before, the last time being in 1995, when it was conducted by Stuart Anderson.

The honour of singing the Laudate Dominum this time goes to Rhona McKail (soprano); mezzo-soprano Colette Ruddy has appeared with the Choral on a number of previous occasions, though the last time was some years ago. The tenor soloist is Iain Paton, who has performed a number of roles with Scottish Opera, Opera North and elsewhere; and the Swedish baritone Anders Östberg likewise comes with an impressive record of performances including Glyndebourne and ENO.

The choir will be accompanied by the Inverness Choral Sinfonia – a small, chamber-orchestra version for this lightly-scored programme – leader Andrew Martin, conducted by Gordon Tocher.

Tickets are available from Eden Court Box Office, price £14 (students/under-16s £7).
