Join the Flock at Timespan

16 Jan 2012 in Highland, Visual Arts & Crafts

How many sheep make up a flock? For Timespan Museum and Arts Centre in Helmsdale, the answer is hopefully hundreds! Over the weekend of 21st and 22nd January 2012, Timespan is inviting visitors of all ages to take part in a free nationwide public art project and have fun at the same time.

‘Join the Flock’ was created by Cumbrian arts organisation Eden Arts as a way of communities to show their support for the British wool industry. People of all ages across the country are contributing to a series of art installations, which will be made up of thousands of pom-pom sheep. Participants are encouraged to show their support for the wool industry by making their sheep using sheep’s wool.

Timespan Director Kati Clark said “We are really pleased to be taking part in this exciting and fun event. The Sutherland landscape has of course been shaped by sheep farming over the years and the industry is still an important part of our communities. Flock is a fantastic creative project that is capturing the imagination of far-flung arts projects – I believe Timespan is hosting the most northerly workshop so far! We would particularly like to make some sheep using local wool, so if you have remnants or odd balls to donate or bring along, please let us know.”

Sheep made over the weekend will be on display in Timespan until February, when they will be herded off to join the rest of the flock in Cumbria for the first large scale installation at Eden Arts. For more information contact Timespan on 01431 821327 or enquiries@timespan.org.uk.

Timespan is open 11am-4pm on Saturday 21st January and Sunday 22nd January 2012. All materials are provided free of charge by Timespan. All children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult.
