DETOURS Discussion for Curators and Museum Directors

18 Jan 2012

THE COMMON GUILD and THE GLASGOW SCHOOL OF ART in association with PAR+RS Present DETOURS Discussion

A one-day symposium about programme and place on Wednesday 8 February 2012 at The Lighthouse, 11 Mitchell Lane, Glasgow G1 3NU

How does context affect a programme? Does it at all? Should it? And can a programme affect a context?

This event brings together a range of views around these questions from leading international curators and museum directors and is to begin what we hope is a longer-term engagement with curators working across Scotland. We hope very much that those working in the Highlands and the Islands will be able to attend, to contribute to the discourse around current and potential future curatorial practices.

There are many contextual factors that can affect contemporary art programmes, from local politics and finance, through institutional history, to current cultural ambitions and geography. Whether in and for building-based, formal institutions, or in more porous situations including ‘public art’ commissioning, context plays a part in the making of a programme. The ‘Detours’ discussion is an opportunity for those involved in programming to hear from colleagues about their approaches in different contexts. Is it appropriate or relevant today to imagine that a programme can instill change in a given context? Or is an over-attention to context a constraint to creative programming?
