Shetland Needleworkers – Rags to Riches
6 Feb 2012 in Shetland, Visual Arts & Crafts
Shetland Needleworkers’ exhibitions have established a reputation for being colourful and accessible yet interesting and varied. The new exhibition opening in Da Gadderie at Shetland Museum and Archives this weekend will not disappoint.
With more entries than ever, this event showcases the creativity and productivity of the members. From quilts and hangings, to pictures, cushions, boxes and bags……..it’s all here.
The pieces are often inspired by the history, flora, fauna and landscape of Shetland. However, some clearly show the influence of more far flung cultures. Some, we suspect, were made because the creator just found that certain bit of fabric irresistible. Most members will admit to being magpies – compelled to acquire any curious material or thread that they come across.
Part of the exhibition is a quirky quilt of demure ‘Bathing Belles’, each one hand sewn and unique. Made by the group, it is being raffled in aid of the Shetland Swimming Association to support youngsters who have considerable travel costs when competing on the mainland. Tickets are available from all Swimming Clubs, Nimble Fingers and from the Needleworkers who will attend the exhibition each afternoon.
Also on display will be the trophies for the Shetland Challenge competition. This annual event is not restricted to Shetland Needlework members but is open to anyone living in Shetland. The aim of the Shetland Challenge is to encourage and promote original needlework. Entry forms will be available at the exhibition.
The Needleworkers ` group meet twice monthly in the Islesburgh Complex and most meetings are in the form of classes or workshops. In this way a continual learning environment is created. Anyone is welcome to join. There is no entry level requirement. The group philosophy is that everyone can learn, whether from each other, or from the talented practitioners who are invited to tutor the group. Further information is available from Sheila Peterson on 01806 577321.
The exhibition runs from 11th February – 18th March 2012. For further information please contact John Hunter at the Shetland Museum and Archives on 01595 741559 or exhibitions@shetland-museum.org.uk.
