Individuals and organisations involved in the creative industries throughout the Outer Hebrides are being encouraged to complete an online survey as part of a comprehensive study which will help shape the future development of the sector.
The research is being undertaken by consultants DC Research who have been commissioned by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), Creative Scotland, Skills Development Scotland and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
The findings will inform a three year strategy aimed at supporting the economic growth of the creative and cultural industries in the Outer Hebrides.
The sector is made up of small organisations and sole traders operating primarily in visual arts and crafts, textile production, media and publishing. Larger businesses exist within the Harris Tweed industry and the broadcasting sector, and a number of prominent art and heritage organisations operate in the social enterprise sector.
Mairi Buchanan, senior development manager at HIE, said: “The Outer Hebrides has distinctive strengths including a strong cultural identity rooted in the Gaelic language and a number of renowned creative and cultural events and facilities. The strategy seeks to build on these strengths and actively encourage new ventures. We are keen to hear from a wide range of individuals and businesses involved in the creative industries and therefore urge them to participate in the short online survey.”
Joe Macphee, head of economic development at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar commented: “The Comhairle is pleased to be supporting this study and would like to encourage as many local businesses as possible to participate. Through doing so, they will assist in raising the understanding and profile of the local creative and cultural scene and its economic benefits to the islands.”
