Creative Scotland invests over £900,000 in improved creative spaces

New cinema spaces, a recording room for poetry and new creative workspaces in the Borders town of Selkirk are amongst some of the projects set to share in new Capital investment from Creative Scotland.

Some of the country’s best-known creative organisations will now improve the experience for their audiences.

Glasgow Film Theatre will create a new third cinema within its existing Café Cosmo space, while six new artists workshops will be converted from an 1820s stables block at the Haining Estate in Selkirk. Glasgow Citizen’s Theatre will replace the seats in the theatre’s stalls and dress circle, while in Airdrie, the refurbished Sir John Wilson Town Hall will open to the public in August with new gallery spaces.

Iain Munro, Director of Creative Development at Creative Scotland, said:

‘These awards are the first step in our plan to ensure we have world class cultural facilities throughout Scotland.  We will invest £30million over the next four years through our Capital Programme as part of our investment in Places and their contribution to a Creative Scotland.

‘We aim to address key needs in the cultural infrastructure and help deliver improved facilities for both artists and audiences through these investments.’

Capital investments were made to the following organisations:

  • Glasgow Film Theatre will create a new third cinema within its existing Café Cosmo space. Cinema 3 will enable GFT to double its programming slots and meet the increased demand for its cinema, learning and outreach work.     • Birks Cinema, a disused 1939 cinema in the central square of the small town of Aberfeldy, Perthshire, will be rebuilt as a state-of-the-art facility and run as a social enterprise in the interests of the people of the Highland Perthshire and wider regions.     • The Scottish Poetry Library will see its small meeting room extended to accommodate double the capacity, it will be used by reading groups and visiting school groups, and the garage will be converted into a collection space and a small soundproofed recording room. (£93,750) Edinburgh
    • North Lands Creative Glass will complete the purchase of the Old School House and adjacent land at the Alastair Pilkington Studio, as part of an exciting development project to create clean workshop space, accommodation and enhanced gallery facilities for course leaders, artists in residence and the community.  North Lands Creative Glass (£90,000) Caithness
    • Clydeside Initiative for Arts, better known as SWG3, received investment towards the third phase of the refurbishment and development of the existing studio space.  SWG3 is a successful performing and visual arts initiative based in the West End of Glasgow providing a unique platform of support for a community of creative practitioners.   • Six workshops for creative businesses will be converted from the 1820s stable block at The Haining Estate in Selkirk. The picturesque estate has a fascinating history and stunning landscape that’s sure to inspire business.   • The Main hall in the Brunton Hall complex in Musselburgh is being extensively redeveloped by the council. The complex attracts a wide range of people visiting for cultural activity; it is also used by the Brunton Theatre, and various other cultural organisations including the Imaginate children’s festival.   • Glasgow’s iconic Citizens Theatre will replace the Stalls and Dress Circle seats in the main auditorium. With the appointment of Dominic Hill as Artistic Director the Company continue to produce some of the finest shows in Scotland which audiences will soon be able to enjoy in even more comfort.   • Glasgow East Arts Company (Platform) office and café bar will be refurbished to create additional office, rehearsal and development space for artists, producers and creative companies.   • The Tron Theatre will convert the Box Office space into a dedicated Education and Learning Suite to house their successful programme and establish an environment where creativity and innovation can flourish. Investment will also see improved access to the building by introducing automatic doors to our Bar & Restaurant and foyer spaces.  The Tron Theatre (£28,830) Glasgow
  • Moniack Mhor, Scotland’s National Writing Centre, delivers a programme of residential creative writing courses in association with the prestigious Arvon Foundation. Investment will go towards the construction of new tutorial and eco built workshop spaces. Moniack Mhor Writers’ Centre (£22,500) Highland

  • Sir John Wilson Town Hall in Airdrie will open to the public this August after extensive building refurbishment which will see it restored to its original grandeur, with 21st century improvements, including a new gallery space. Through additional investment they will be able to buy new equipment for the main hall stage, auditorium and the lesser hall. (£21,500) Lanarkshire Council. Airdrie – North Lanarkshire
  • Multi arts studio and production space Out of the Blue in Edinburgh will expand its music rehearsal room facilities with the addition of equipment and new multimedia studio will be created. Out of the Blue (£20,140) Edinburgh
  • Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery, in Clydebank Town Hall, will be refurbished and new gallery spaces will be created. Exhibitions include a major exhibition of Scottish twentieth century art, in partnership with the National Galleries of Scotland collections. West Dunbartonshire Council (£10,460)
  • The local Village Hall in Cannich is currently being refurbished; additional investment will allow the community to purchase staging and audio equipment. Strathglass and Affric Community Co Ltd (£10,000) Highland
