Skye-based artist exhibits in Fochabers

29 Jun 2012 in Highland, Moray, Visual Arts & Crafts

An established landscape artist and an emerging talent in the form are currently exhibiting their work at the Just Art gallery in Fochabers.

Charles Monteith Walker attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee and has been producing oil paintings inspired by the Mediterranean since the mid 1990s. His work is bold in colour and composition, mixing imagery, symbols and shapes from a variety of different sources both geographically and historically. Mr Walker moves easily from representational landscape and still life to imaginative, vibrantly coloured stylised compositions all crafted in thick layers of oil paint giving his works a strong, sculptural quality.

Helena Emmans grew up in Edinburgh and after gaining a B.A.(Hons) in Design (specialising in textiles) from Glasgow School of Art she moved to Skye where she has lived for 12 years. Emmans’ style of painting is to capture the scene in a single session with no reworking. She uses a combination of acrylics, pastels, crayons, and pencils and often paints in the same places at different times of the day, observing and absorbing the changing days and seasons.

The exhibition is open until July 14th.

Just Art focuses on showing contemporary work by artists who live and work in Scotland. Established by Judith and Stewart Harris in 1994 the gallery aims to take the mystique out of buying art.

“In acknowledging that galleries can be intimidating places, Just Art endeavours to provide a comfortable environment where people are free to browse and find a suitable piece of work,” says Mr Harris. “The emphasis is on providing access to high quality, affordable art in relaxed surroundings.”

A full range of Fine and Applied Arts is included in the gallery’s programme of monthly exhibitions featuring work by both established and rising artists. In addition there is a wide selection of work by gallery artists who show throughout the year. Exhibits on display include framed acrylics, oils, watercolours and prints, textiles, glass, ceramics, wood and jewellery.

There is also an exhibition called 6×6 which is a personal choice of six of the best Scottish based potters working today, namely, Patricia Shone, Hannah McAndrew, Miriam Reid, Daniel Kavanagh, Lara Scobie and Fiona Thompson.
