Shetland Arts’ amazing new film project, Hansel of Film, promoted by acclaimed film critic Mark Kermode and film historian, Linda Ruth Williams, is on the road!

A Hansel of Film – Shetland to Southampton and Back is a relay of screenings of short films made by the public across the UK as part of the London 2012 Festival, celebrating the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The relay started on the 10th June 2012 at the Garrison Theatre in Lerwick, Shetland and reaches its halfway point in Southampton on 15th July 2012. It will then work its way back through a total of 24 locations to reach its climax back in Shetland on the 7th and 8th of September 2012 for a marathon screening of highlights in Shetland Arts’ brand new venue, Mareel, as part of the agency’s annual film festival, Screenplay.

The project is a celebration of amateur film across the whole of the UK. The relay will feature special highlights on the route, such as the delivery of the film from Bo’ness to Edinburgh in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang!

The films are being relayed by “runners”, a selection of film-loving volunteers who deliver the films to the next stop on the relay by a method of their choosing, including bike, kayak, Scottish dancing, busking fiddler, mobile ceilidh, and even a pantomime horse who will re-enact famous moments from equine film history along the way.

At each stop the audience will enjoy films from Shetland, films from their area and films from the previous stop in the relay. All the films have been made by non-professionals.
