Dame Emma Kirkby develops special relationship with North of Scotland

31 Jul 2012 in Highland, Music

One of the world’s top ten sopranos is hosting a concert in the north of Scotland in September to help raise funds for two local schools. Dame Emma Kirkby and the internationally renowned lutenist Jakob Lindberg will perform together in Inverness for the first time on Saturday, September 29th.

The city is fortunate to be attracting artistes of such high calibre. Emma has recently received an honorary doctorate from Aberdeen University to celebrate her connection to the university, and her unique and unparalleled exploration of renaissance and baroque music.

Her distinctively clear, expressive voice marries beautifully with the rich subtlety of the lute, creating a colourful tapestry of harmony which brings the philosophy and sounds of the past to life. Her voice has become the sound of baroque and early music in the same way that Pavarotti is synonymous with the Romantics. Both Emma and Jakob have collaborated with many chamber groups, orchestras, producers and directors around the globe.

Their Highland programme the distillation of silence explored through lute and voice looks at the ideas and culture of that period, offering the listener an uplifting and reflective experience.

The concert is in aid of the Moray Steiner School (charitable status) and the forthcoming Moray Acorn Upper School based in Forres. Emma said: “I have performed in Orkney and Aberdeen before so I’m very much looking forward to Inverness. For me the special repertoire, the sound and inspiration of the Highlands, the beauty of mellow old-style venues, and the energy released by the collective attention of a group of open-minded listeners is exceptionally rewarding.

“I have witnessed the wonderful effect of Steiner education on a few friends over the years, here and in other countries. And recently I have heard of and seen the transformation in two dear young people in my extended family [who attend Moray Steiner School].”

Tickets are limited and are available to purchase online now at www.moraysteinerschool.org and in person at Leakey’s Bookshop, Church Street, Inverness and Phoenix Shop, The Park, Findhorn.
