The Man Who Had All The Luck
21 Sep 2012 in Dance & Drama
By Arthur Miller – Touring from Orkney to London this autumn.
David Beeves, a motor mechanic in a small rural Midwest American town in the late 1930s, is blessed with good fortune. In contrast, his family and friends face difficult times. While those around him suffer everyday failures, David continues to prosper. Yet the more success David achieves, the more guilty, depressed and paranoid he feels about the plight of those around him. Soon he begins to wonder what will happen when his luck runs out…
Arthur Miller once described his work as having the “American dream” as its background, with the “American nightmare” at its foreground. Written in 1944, when America was at a cultural and political crossroads, The Man Who Had All the Luck was Miller’s first foray into Broadway and closed after only four performances. With America bursting with national pride, months away from winning World War II, it was perhaps the timing of this bleak examination of the country’s social responsibility that sealed its fate. Miller’s reaction ironically exemplifies one of the play’s dominating themes; that a man’s success is ultimately determined by how he responds to the luck he is dealt – whether he lies down or stands back up, sinks or swims.
