An Talla Solais News – September 2012

28 Sep 2012 in Highland, Visual Arts & Crafts

Here is the latest news from the last month at An Talla Solais in Ullapool plus a reminder that the last scheduled show of the year, the Members’ Show, is open until 7th October 2012.

September Members’ Show
15th September – 7th October 20142 (10am – 4pm daily)

Don’t miss the last major show of the year, the ATS annual exhibition of work made by their many members. Go and see their first Members’ Show Focus, this year featuring the work of photographers Iain Sarjeant and Peter Haring, a unique pairing of almost abstract winter images with the passion of the Edinburgh Festival. Alongside the Photo Focus there is work by new Members on display as well as more familiar artists: don’t miss striking paintings by Dan Murray, elegant ceramics by Helen Michie and much more.

James Lumsden at Rhue Art
29th September – mid-November 2012; private view Friday 28th 5-7pm

The new exhibition at Rhue Art shows new work by James Lumsden, ATS’s artist in residence in 2012. .“These new paintings continue to build upon the recent Liquid Light series, but titles such as Contrapuntal and Fugue introduce an analogy to music within the work. Each painting sets its evocation of light, colour and atmosphere within varying dynamics, rhythm and movement.” A great opportunity to see where James’ work has taken him since his time in Ullapool.

Ceangal: connections
Until 6th October 2012 in the GALE Centre, Gairloch

After 2 weeks of exuberant activities, the Ceangal international artists’ residency in the Gairloch area has now ended. The work produced is on show at the GALE centre until October 6th 2012. They would be delighted to see you. For more information on the Ceangal project, including pictures of the artists at work in the wild winds of recent weeks, see the blog.

Automate at ATS

ATS loved having London artists Elle Salt and WM Hudson in their art room for a week at the start of the month. Starting out with blank white circles and a baffling painting machine, Bill kept  visitors curious while he slowly created 20 paintings under the public eye, assisted by such diverse groups such as the local Brownies and tourists from a visiting cruise liner. Elle’s animation of Bill’s creations shed a little light on the process, and her film of Ullapool was a jaunty take on the village. As for the art dispensing machine, it was surrounded by visitors putting their 20ps in the slot to claim gorgeous but tiny pieces of art, from silver by Merlin Planterose to minute books by Jan Breckenridge. ATS would like to thank  all who created artwork for the capsules. They are now fully dispensed and your tiny art is out in the world! You can catch up with the Automate project on Facebook.

ATS Open Day

ATS would like to thank all who helped out with the annual Open Day on 8th September 2012. Your cakes were magnificent and we much enjoyed the relaxed company of visitors in their impromptu outdoor cafe. Another great opportunity to see ATS in its summer glory.

Mara: a celebration of the sea by 200 artists

ATS are pleased to let you know that their fundraising exhibition, Mara, has been a great success, raising us over £3000. They are very grateful to those of you who created a Mara square or more for them, and to those who came along to support the auction and the sale of these little pieces of the sea. The funds raised will make a critical difference to ATS this year. And the show has been a fun way to get people making art, including local primary pupils who used it as inspiration for their own work.

The Curious Parade: An Talla Solais at Loopallu

Last weekend a group of very hard-working volunteers staffed the Art Tent at Ullapool’s annual music festival, Loopallu. With 300 children on site they had our work cut out for us, creating kites, crazy masks and wellies and trying our hand at graffiti and face painting. It was lots of fun and again huge thanks go to the volunteers who made it possible.

Bon voyage to Charlotte Watters!

This week ATS’s Exhibitions Officer, Charlotte Watters, sets sail for the high seas. Charlotte has been an indispensable member of the team at ATS and she will be hugely missed. ATS wish her very well and they look forward to her future return with all manner of travellers’ tales!
