The Royal Scottish Academy Open exhibition is the most prestigious open-submission exhibition for small works in Scotland. Taking place during the Christmas run-up, it is designed to maximise commercial opportunities, towards supporting the visual arts community in Scotland.
Historically incorporated into the larger RSA Annual Exhibition, in 2010 the open submission policy was removed and transferred to its new position as a standalone show, with the focus on small works in the lower galleries.
The Academy accepts work in any medium, including digital/electronic media. Please note the deadline for digital submissions and refer to the regulations booklet for further information on submitting works.
Last year’s exhibition was a great success, with over 13,000 visitors to the show and record sales. The RSA hopes to continue this success with this year’s exhibition – the 4th RSA Open.
All works submitted to the exhibition will be reviewed by a selection panel led by this year’s convenor, George Donald RSA. The notification date for unsuccessful works is 15th and 16th November. All unsuccessful works must be collected the following days, 17th and 18th November.
The traditional Varnishing Day event allows artists whose works have been selected for the exhibition to come and have a preview of the show and meet fellow artists. The press are also invited to attend this event. The Varnishing Day this year will take place on Thursday 22nd November, 2-4pm.
