New drama event to leave audience seeing red, white and blue
23 Oct 2012 in Dance & Drama, Highland
Next month, a new event will bring together original drama work by Inverness College students and the Inverness Playwright group to be performed for the first time at IG:LU in Church Street, Inverness.
Play Pieces Shorts challenged writers to come up with pieces of theatre, ranging from 2 to 15 minutes long, around the theme of Red, White and Blue and the response has resulted in a wide range of ideas.
Lindsay Brown, creator of Play Pieces, says that each evening will be completely different although there is a chance to see most of the work over the course of the 3 dates.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect when we decided on the theme of Red, White and Blue” she explained “but what we now have programmed is a diverse mix of shows; one will run in three installments across the event, some involve a degree of audience participation and one even takes place in the toilet! It’s a great way to make theatre fun and accessible.”
Play Pieces Shorts takes place across Thursday 22, Friday 23 and Saturday 24 November, starting at 7pm each evening. All the work has been written by up & coming local talent as well as involving a lot of local actors as well.
Lindsay Brown explained “we brought together the playwrights and actors one evening to get them talking about their work and how they can get involved with Play Pieces Shorts. It was really useful and I would love to hold more events to encourage new partnerships to develop.”
Play Pieces Shorts is aiming to be uniquely funded using crowdfunding investment which anyone can support by heading to the Play Pieces website www.playpieces.co.uk and making a contribution. There are also some fantastic rewards available to anyone who supports the exciting initiative, including copies of the scripts.
“Play Pieces Shorts will be fun. This is the first time we have tried something like this and I hope it really appeals to people. It’s a great way to see short pieces of theatre, in an informal and unusual setting. It’s great to be able to use IG:LU which is such a versatile performance space. I love the challenge of using somewhere that people wouldn’t expect to see theatre.”
The full programme for Play Pieces Shorts can be found at www.playpieces.co.uk and the event runs from Thursday 22 – Saturday 24 November at IG:LU, from 7pm.
