New work at Inverness Museum & Art Gallery Foyer Craft Gallery
4 Feb 2013 in Highland, Visual Arts & Crafts
The Foyer Gallery at Inverness Musuem and Art Gallery this month presents the work of Julia Smith and Karen Livingstone.
Julia Smith is a studio potter who works from her home at Ardersier near Inverness, overlooking the Moray Firth. She experiments with glazes to achieve subtle hues, often using light glazes over dark red clay. She makes very affordable, simple and beautiful handmade ceramics. The work on display ranges from everyday mugs and dishes in pastel glazes decorated with simple line drawings inspired by nature – birds, boats, plants and butterflies – to larger statement pieces, in bold simple shapes with dark glazes and distinctive abstract designs.
Julia graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1996 and settled in Ardersier last year after studying abroad and working and teaching in Glasgow.
Karen Livingstone is a textile artist from Tain who works in a variety of materials including Harris Tweed, silk and cotton. On display is a selection of Harris tweed bags, a silk-lined cotton bodice, corsages and a beautiful tweed coat with a velvet collar which can be ordered and made to measure directly from the artist.
