Music in Inverness Town House in March

25 Feb 2013 in Highland, Music

“The rapture caused the heart to race while the intensity of expression set the lip a-quiver”

So wrote music critic Edward Bhesania in The Strad magazine about the playing of the London Bridge Ensemble at the Kings Place during January this year, and just one of the many plaudits the Ensemble receives on a regular basis. From London to Inverness comes this outstanding quintet under the leadership of pianist Daniel Tong and featuring violinist Laura Samuel, violist Tom Dunn, cellist Kate Gould and baritone Ivan Ludlow – all names worth travelling to hear individually, but when put together they deliver something very special.

Their programme for Inverness Chamber Music in the Town House on Wednesday 6th March at 8.00pm starts with the Piano Quartet No 3 in C minor, Op.60 by Brahms after which Ivan Ludlow and Daniel Tong will perform the lieder settings of six Heine poems from Schwanengesang D957 by Schubert. After the interval it is all Dvořák, firstly the Seven Gypsy Songs, Op.55 that includes the enchanting Songs My Mother Taught Me and finishing the evening with his Piano Quartet No 2 in E flat major, Op.87.

Tickets (Adults £13; Eden Court Friends £12) can be booked online at www.invernesschambermusic.com or purchased at Eden Court Box Office (in person or 01463 234234 or www.eden-court.co.uk) or at the door on the night from 7.30pm.

The following week, at lunchtime on Thursday 14th March, At One With Music will welcome Trio Kosmos, specialists in world music, and featuring the outstanding violinist Harriet Mackenzie (half of the Sutherland Duo), violist Meg Hamilton and the award-winning Serbian accordionist Milos Milivojevic. Expect a mesmerising hour of East European, gypsy and kletzmer musical virtuosity, and possibly their haunting arrangement of Bach’s Air on a G string.

Admission to this perfect way to break the day costs £5 (children £1) and the doors to the Town House will open at 12.30pm, with the performance starting at 1.00pm.
