It might sound like a controversial start to a lunchtime theatre season but Lindsay Brown insists that The Gospel Inquiry is anything but.

Play Pieces lunchtime theatre season returns on 4 May with an exciting contemporary offering from Moray-based writer and actor Sandy Nelson. The Gospel Inquiry is a satirical look at how we interpret information fed to us, through the media, drawing parallels with the Leveson Inquiry and using the 4 Gospels as characters to guide us through a hilarious re-telling of well-known stories.

“For anyone who is a fan of The Life of Brian or The Thick of It, this production is a must-see.” Lindsay explained. “It’s very funny and of course raises lots of questions about how we interpret events, how many different eyes can view history differently and how much we choose to believe what we are told by news sources. It’s not a controversial production at all I’m afraid. It’s hugely relevant to what is going on in society just now, the power the press and politicians have to spin and re-tell events and how society accepts ‘facts’. ”

Play Pieces, supported by Creative Scotland, is showcasing 7 months of theatre produced by Highland Theatre companies, running from May until November, extending the previous season by 1 month but maintaining the informal approach to theatre by using a central venue in the form of the Spectrum centre and including lunch in the £10 ticket price.

Lindsay Brown says “It’s all about making it accessible for people watch a show. Come in, grab your lunch and watch a play which is no more than 1 hour. Then if you have shopping to do or need to head back to the West coast where you live then you can. It’s a great way to fit some drama into your day.”

The Play Pieces season continues with a mix of productions including dark dramas and more light-hearted comedies but each show features Highland talent, combining up and coming companies with well-known names. Play Pieces is also looking to create A People’s Performance using the support of the public to produce a show in August.

‘Gerry and the Glasshouse features students from the Drama HND at Inverness college’ Brown explained ‘So we thought this would be a great example of the support that Play Pieces lends to new talent – these actors are terrific so we want everyone to support this production – there are lots of rewards for individuals or even companies that do!”.
